"Call A Friend"

A friend once asked me to help him with his English assignment. The instruction is to make paragraphs with different concepts (in which you will see below after this). I just want to share this to you guys since I kinda think my english sounded nice, at least for me. Hah. And by the way, the stories I related to every paragraph I made were all based on my experience, so I hope you can also relate!

--------------------

Lesson 1: Paragraph by Narration (Anecdote)

It was Sunday morning at the Rodeo Arena in Manresa when I arrived early for training. I was about to go for a jog before the training started when I saw someone whose face was not familiar to me. He was sitting on a bench near the arena, so I went to him and asked, “Are you waiting for someone?” He replied, “Yes, I am. I’m waiting for my friend who invited me to join their rodeo organization.” Then I introduced myself to him, telling him I’m from the same organization. “So you’re interested to join. Do you want to go with me to jog?” I asked. “Sure,” he replied. We went together for a jog while his friend, who was my colleague, hadn’t arrived yet, and while jogging, I talked to him about rodeo and he seemed to look really interested. When we came back to the arena, my colleague was already there. Then the guy said to my colleague, “I want to join your organization.” That was when he started joining our training.

Lesson 2: Paragraph by Character Sketch

Watching our professor teaching us during the last period of our afternoon class, made me think how passionate he is with his profession. Not only during classes that I observe him with this, but also at times when his students go to him and ask several questions regarding the subjects that he handles, and how he answers them clearly and even share things thoroughly to them just for them to understand. He’s not only good at teaching, but he’s also good at working with his colleagues. He is an open-minded person, he also listens to the opinions of others who get to talk to him and give them good advice as well. That’s why a lot of his students always remember him, and they might as well carry with them the memories they had with him all the days of their lives.

Lesson 3: Paragraph by Process

People nowadays have been interested about going on adventures, especially when they want to take a break from reality. Before, some would only settle for a window shopping at the mall, or they just want to relax at home. Now, people would love to explore to different places. But how do you really know which places to go to?

First, you have to think about the things you are most interested of doing: Do you like doing outdoors like camping? Trekking? Swimming? Or perhaps playing indoor sports?

Second, you can ask your friends who have gone to places which fit your taste. You can also think of the places that a lot of people have been talking about; tourist spots near your area or even those that are miles away from home.

Third, if you already know where to go, you can then research for that place and know how to get there; getting information like the means of transportation, fare, travel time, and the like.

Finally, schedule the date of your adventure!

It’s better to plan ahead of time so that you will have enough time to prepare not only the money, but also yourself and the things you need to bring. Getting yourself in an adventure is a really good way to take a break, and see the many beautiful things that you haven’t seen yet.

Lesson 4: Paragraph by Description

Do you remember the time when you played patintero with your neighbors along the streets in your neighborhood? You had so much time that your mother came to you and scolded you because it was already past 6 o’clock and you weren’t home yet. Do you remember when you cut classes in elementary because you and your friends played basketball in your barangay’s basketball court? You were still in your school uniform when you got there but before playing, you took it off and wore only your undershirt because you were afraid your mother might find out you cut classes, and you came home very late and sweaty so your mother still found it out so you got scolded still. Do you even remember those days when you always waited until 5:00pm just to watch your favorite anime Dragon Ball Z? Or that time when you were shocked when Sakuragi shaved his red head for losing the game against Riyonan?

Gone are the days when kids were already satisfied with playing larong pinoy in the streets and watching series of anime shows on television. Gone are the days when you arrived home with bruises from playing outdoors, which truly means you had a good time. Gone are the days when you and your friends would just sit in the corner of the streets and eat frozen nata de coco and Game Ka Na Ba junk food (with small random toys inside) while talking about your favorite cartoon characters.

You can never bring those things back because kids nowadays are already immersed with gadgets and other modern things to do. You might not bring those things back but you sure had the best time of your childhood lives.

Lesson 5: Paragraph by Example

You really wouldn’t know if you like the things that you do unless you try doing it. I know a lot of people who first didn’t have the passion for the things that they actually enjoy doing now. One is and economics major graduate who is now doing urban gardening and is actually influencing people to do the same thing. A woman who hated vegetables but is now making a smoothie out of it, and makes it her morning drink. A man who wanted to play soccer but ended up playing basketball instead because his father was a former basketball player, but he loves doing it now.

One should always give a try on things before making a decision of not doing it at all.

Lesson 6: Paragraph by Classification

There are three types of women according to how they clothe themselves: the girly, the neutral and the manang. The girly is wears womanly clothes and applies makeup. She likes doing these things because she feels like she gains more confidence if when doing so. The neutral is the one who wears only the clothes she’s comfortable with, the usual t-shirt and jeans; she wears womanly clothes only when it’s necessary. The manang is the one who doesn’t go with the trend. She feels like the new trend won’t look good on her; she’s the opposite of “the girly” because she doesn’t feel confident if she goes along with the trend. Women, and probably men as well, have different perspective in how they choose the clothes they wear and how they gain confidence from them, nevertheless, it’s what you feel you’re comfortable of wearing that’s important.

Lesson 7: Paragraph by Comparison and/or Contrast

The vegan and the meat eaters present their stand on why they prefer this and that. Vegan only eats vegetables and consumes products that are vegetable-based because of the many nutrients that they get from these that contribute to their health, and also because some of them consider the welfare of the animals being slaughtered for food consumption. On the other hand, meat-eaters prefer consuming meat products because of their taste, and also, cooking meat is more convenient to cook since there are faster ways of cooking them compared with cooking vegetables. Moreover, a lot of meat-eaters don’t like the taste of most vegetables.

There are many things to debate about the two but both vegetables and meats have nutrients that humans can benefit. It’s just a matter of balancing which food is necessary to intake at some point in time.

Lesson 8: Paragraph by Analogy

Playing rodeo is like facing a problem. Before you get inside the arena, you should be in full gear, you should be prepared. In rodeo, there are categories that involve only one man inside the arena, and there is also a team category. When you are in a one-man category, you have to be brave enough to be one-on-one with the cattle; while in a team category, you have to coordinate with your team mates, each of you have important roles in the game; you coordinate with each other for you to be able to wrestle the cattle together, you should keep watch on one another. One of the important rules in playing rodeo is that you don’t turn your back on the cattle, because if you do, you wouldn’t know if it’s going to chase you and wrestle you instead.

Lesson 9: Paragraph by Cause and Effect

Every rainy season, people tend to be grumpy because of the floods that the rain brings. Unfortunately, the people who react to the situation are the same people who fall short on throwing their garbage on the right places and segregating them. Throwing your garbage anywhere causes a lot of trouble not only to people, but also to the environment, and more importantly, to the lands where crops are being cultivated which are our sources of consumption. If only humans are knowledgeable and disciplined enough of these things, our world must have become a better place to live.

Lesson 10: Paragraph by Definition

Do you know the “mañana” habit by the Filipino? It is something that Filipinos learned from the Spaniards which means “tomorrow” or specific time in the future. It is an action of delaying or postponing something that is supposed to be done at the moment, or simply another term for procrastination, thus the Filipino term “mamaya na”. Mañana habit has become a habit that Filipinos got used of doing. This habit applies to all sorts of things but it can also affect one’s health. That’s why one should get rid of this habit and replace it with better habits to achieve their goal.
